Best Time to Visit Jaisalmer: A Season-by-Season Guide

Jaisalmer sits deep in the Thar Desert, which means the city experiences some of the most extreme temperature swings in Rajasthan. Picking the right season can be the difference between a magical desert evening and an uncomfortable afternoon spent hiding from the sun. Here's a month-by-month breakdown to help you plan your visit around the weather, the crowds, and the experiences you actually want to have.
Winter (November to February): The Best Time to Visit
This is peak season in Jaisalmer, and for good reason. Daytime temperatures hover between 15°C and 25°C, making it comfortable to explore the fort, havelis, and markets on foot for hours at a stretch. Evenings and nights get genuinely cold, especially out on the dunes, so pack a jacket if you're planning a desert camp stay.
Winter is also when the Jaisalmer Desert Festival takes place (typically in January or February), featuring camel races, folk performances, turban-tying competitions, and a full moon celebration at Sam Sand Dunes. If your dates line up with the festival, book your cab and camp well in advance — this is the busiest stretch of the year.
Summer (March to June): Hot, Dry, and Best Avoided
Summer temperatures in Jaisalmer regularly cross 40°C, and by May and June they can push past 45°C during the day. Desert safaris and outdoor sightseeing become genuinely risky in this heat, and many camel and jeep safari operators shorten their hours or pause daytime activities altogether.
If you must travel in summer — for a wedding, work, or a stopover — plan sightseeing for early morning or after sunset, stay well hydrated, and choose an air-conditioned vehicle for every leg of your journey. We always recommend AC sedans or SUVs for summer transfers, never a non-AC option.
Monsoon (July to September): Quiet, Green, and Underrated
Jaisalmer doesn't get heavy monsoon rainfall like other parts of India, but the desert does turn a surprising shade of green after a few showers, and temperatures drop to a more manageable range. This is the off-season, so you'll find fewer crowds, better hotel rates, and a more relaxed pace across the city.
The trade-off is that some desert camps scale back their overnight offerings during the wettest weeks, so it's worth confirming camp availability before you lock in a multi-day itinerary.
Post-Monsoon (October): The Sweet Spot Before the Rush
October is a wonderful transition month — the heat has broken, the crowds haven't fully arrived yet, and the desert light is spectacular for photography. It's a great time to combine city sightseeing with a desert safari without competing for camel rides or camp slots.
Our Recommendation
If your travel dates are flexible, aim for December through February for the most comfortable all-round experience, or October and November if you want similar weather with smaller crowds.
